We were victorious against St. Mary with a score of 5-1. Team record to date is 3-2-1. The boys are coming together with their skills as well as sportsmanship and teamwork. Credit to Martin for some of the drills that we’ve been practicing on Tuesdays. They have come in handy in some of our matches and really have added to our overall experience. Our next match up is this weekend against Walnut Hills @ noon. Armleder #6.

Girls Strikers (from Coach Lisa Galvin-Sang): Mercy's girls strikers team won last weekend's game 2-1. They've scored a bunch of goals this season and their skills continue to improve. This season Mercy teamed up with Queen of Angles and it's been a good experience for all. Goals have been scored by Kate Crotty, Jenna Lawhorn, and Olivia Steinkamp. Other teammates have taken a number of shots on goal and hope to score very soon! Thanks to all of the parents and coaches for your support of our girls!

Boys Strikers (from Michele Geiger); The boys are fighting to hold onto first place in their division and a spot in the SAY tournament. They are currently tied for that spot with a 4-1 record. This weekend's highlights included two awesome headers by Magnificent (Ben) Mansfield and Terrific Thomas (Coughlin). (Ouch--doesn't that hurt?) The team is also enjoying regular scrimmage games with the friends they made last season when the St. Cecilia boys teamed up with Mercy to form one team. Next scrimmage with St. Cecilia--including grills and goodies--will be Oct. 8, 6:00, at St. Rose!

Girls Wings (from Coach Sean Smith ) The Mercy girl Wings team is having a fun and exciting season so far. We have been working hard in practices and the girls are really coming together as a team. It is great to see them holding positions and passing so well in the games. So far, the girl's have 3 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie.

Boy’s Wings (from Coach Matt McLaughlin): We are having another great season, playing to a tie with 7 boys out and no substitutes against a very good Clifton team Saturday, and winning 3-0 Sunday to bring our record to 5-0-1.

Girl’s Passers #2 (from Coach Shannon Keesee): The Girls Passers are improving with every game. Our goalies are stopping lots of great shots, and our offense is working hard to score. We’re all about fun, learning new skills, and embracing the team aspect of soccer. All the players are engaged, we have great sideline support from the parents, and we’re looking forward to finishing the season strong!

Boy’s Passers #1 (from Coach Tim Bronsil): The boys are having an incredible season so far with fifteen goals in five games and a record of 3-2. The goals, coming off the feet of five different players, are the result of a significant team effort. They have shown strong defense, crisp passes, and relentless pursuit of the ball. With only nine players, the boys spend a lot of time on the field. We’re all having a blast (and not just because of a post-practice water balloon fight).

Key: “Kickers” – 7th & 8th grade; “Strikers” – 5th & 6th grade; “Wings” – 3rd & 4th grade; “Passers” – 1st & 2nd grade

WINTER SPORTS
Interested in registering for Winter sports (basketball, volleyball, swimming)? It is with great pleasure that the Mercy Athletic Boosters announce the continuation of our relationship with Challenger British Soccer. We will have a skills coach to supplement our volunteer soccer coaches for the Fall 2008 season. The feedback from players, coaches, and parents was very positive about the Spring experience, which made this an easy decision.

As this is relatively new for all involved (particularly for those new to Mercy and its sports programs), we feel it’s important to share the reasons we chose Challenger and how it is being paid for (not from school operating funds).

What was the Booster’s thought process in hiring a skills coach?
• Our goal as Boosters is to provide the resources necessary to make each experience with our athletic programs a positive one. We strive to create great educational opportunities when on the field, track, or court.
• We review feedback from coaches and parents about their experience. From that, we make decisions on how to improve the next time. In a soccer survey a couple of years ago, some glaring issues caused the Boosters to act.
• Parents identified the need to have an increased focus on learning the skills of the game. Each team had varying levels of skills training dependent on the knowledge of the VOLUNTEER coach.
• We’re indebted to the coaches for the time they give to our school. Coaches asked to receive more help to plan practices that would include building blocks of learning. Anything we can do to help the coaches is one of our top priorities.

Did we do this to become more competitive?
• No. The skills coach was hired to provide a better educational experience and provide consistency for the players and coaches. With an increased focus on the skills of the game, the players should feel more comfortable when they are on the field. At the end of the day, our hope is that your son or daughter learns a great deal about the game and feels like a contributing member of the team.

How is this paid for? The operating budget of the school?
• An anonymous donor has contributed 80% of the cost and has committed to doing the same this Fall. We’re very thankful for the generosity of the donor.
• The other 20% comes from the boosters operating budget. This budget comes from team
fees, donations, and fund raisers. The budget is used to purchase uniforms, rent gym time, pay tournament fees, and pay player and team fees.
• The Annual Fund, Spring Fling, and the operating budget of the school are NOT used at all for this purpose.

Isn’t there a cheaper alternative than hiring a company to handle this? Can we get volunteers todo this?
• The Boosters investigated a number of options prior to signing with Challenger. None of these options provided the opportunity for all of our teams; had as flexible a schedule; had as flexible a pricing model; or handled the entire process from start to finish.

Do we pay for the travel, lodging, and other expenses of the trainer?
• No. We pay one flat fee that covers these expenses. The trainer lives with Mercy families during his 10‐week project with our school.

How do you gauge success?
• From your feedback. From coach feedback. We assess all of this and make a determination on how to proceed for the next season. Our meetings are open to all parents who would like to learn more about our organization and offer feedback. Please come!

If you have any additional questions, please let any of the Boosters officers know.

Thank you!

Tim Bronsil – President
Jeff Spelman – Vice President
Jayme Smith – Secretary
Karsten Sommer – Treasurer
Michele Geiger – Soccer CoordinatorMercy Boostershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02746726398609838930noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3493190835472378428.post-47308392350304076592008-02-13T10:51:00.000-08:002008-02-13T10:54:44.080-08:00Track an Field Information2008 Spring Season

Track is open as an after school activity for Boys and Girls in levels 4-8.

Practices will begin the week of March 31st and will conclude the week of May 12th. Every day after school, this trainer will be at Mercy soccer practices working with coaches and players to make the season the most fun and rewarding experience ever for everyone! (Thanks to the huge success of the Mercy Metric and several generous donations from Mercy community members, this is all possible!)

Dedicated Mercy Soccer Fields
All teams will practice at the LeBlond and St. Rose fields (located right next to each other on Eastern Ave.) This facilitates easy access from Mercy, carpooling between teams (since all teams will be at the same fields), easy access to the trainer who will be at these fields every day, and encourages a sense of community for Mercy families. A playground is also located at the LeBlond Field.

Awesome new uniforms
Last fall, new, dynamic uniforms were purchased and will be utilized again this spring! This included red socks for everyone to go with the shorts and jersey, new goalie jerseys, new scrimmage pennies and goalie gloves for the older teams.Mercy Boostershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02746726398609838930noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3493190835472378428.post-9132280322123482682008-01-24T06:55:00.000-08:002008-01-24T07:08:32.960-08:00Soccer Excitement Day January 24th<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-IkaNo1pnCKQBHvIl0aSeKObR1R9mmC2J-FfCq_SA7_2t5XUWXEWRqLqawRTFpp2PFlV6FzaPymKn7PoSbfTkpOiLv5FxWbCtM_95-n0XWz4fs28UbPe6NESq9VXO2vrEkJHLstniFFE/s320/girlssoccer.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137586048899250450" />Mercy's Soccer Excitement Day is Thursday, January 24th from 3:15 - 6:30 pm in the school cafeteria. More than 300 students, teachers, alumni, family members and friends of the school came out to run or walk at Lunken Airport in early-September. The event raised more than $8,000 for the Mercy Boosters Athletic Programs.

Veteran volunteers, Sr. Aloyse, Tom Grant, Patty Normile, Bob Coughlin, and Mark Flaspohler joinedrookie co-chairs Kim Perry and Shannon Keesee to set up registration, water stations, and timers at the direction of Race Director, Don Connelly and his team.

Dozens of Mercy families showed up to run and walk the race, volunteer, and/or cheer on the runners. Before the race, Kerry Butkovich’s Seton High school volleyball team participated in a Cross Fit warmup workout. In addition, the runners and walkers were treated to a big Mercy cheer when more than 50 students and family members lined up to thank all the runners during the “Bronsil Rah-Rah”.

Top Mercy finishers included:
Amy Ruschulte(2nd place/women-5k), Jonathan Hawgood, Mercy alum and parent (4th place/men-5k) and Todd Mansfield (6th place/men -5k.

Johnny Engle (7th level) was the first Mercy student to cross the finish line, and Josh Mansfield, Peter Felton, Danny Felton, the Coughlin kids, Onnie Middendorf, and Carli Flaspohler weren’t far behind in the 5k run.

Our die-hard 10k Mercy runners included John Fronduti, Mark Boyle, Bill and Kendra Broderick, Susan Bronsil, and Margie Zyck. Great job!

Even the teachers got into the act! Melissa Himmelbauer, Diane Fee, Allison McDonough, and Anthony Bernal were among the 5k walkers. If you have had thoughts about coaching but aren't sure, now is the time to come and find out what it would be about.

Our goal is to pair "experienced" coaches up with new coaches so each team has a dynamic dual for the season. The Mercy Boosters is also in the process of arranging for experienced soccer "skills" coaches to assist coaches at practices.

So if you feel you could coach team but don't know where to start, this is a great season to GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME and learn from some experienced professionals! All current coaches who wish to continue coaching in the spring as well as any new coaches are all asked to attend and share your thoughts about Mercy Soccer.

For more information contact Michele Geiger, 231-1794, mjgeiger@cinci.rr.com.Mercy Boostershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02746726398609838930noreply@blogger.com
